Dental Implants: Everything You Need To Know
Welcome to our helpful guide on Dental Implants: What to Expect, Complications, Procedure and FAQs.
After deciding that you are getting a dental implant, you may have a little anxiety about what to expect and what your recovery time will be. Do not worry because it is easier than you think and knowledge is power.
First, your dentist will take x-rays to determine bone and gum condition and to id any potential warnings. Then your dentist will take an impression of your mouth to get a replica. The impression process may be unpleasant if you have an active gag reflex. Speak to your dentist if this is a concern.
If your tooth is still in your mouth, then your dentist will need to extract it. The extraction can occur at the same time as the implant insertion. Most likely, your dentist will use a local injection of lidocaine to ensure a pain-free procedure. Do not smoke, drink through a straw, spit excessively or blow your nose for a minimum of 24 hours after your extraction. It can cause a dry socket and unnecessary pain.
After the tooth is removed, your dentist will drill a hole in your jawbone. Then the dentist will insert the implant deep in your jawbone, which makes the artificial root for your new tooth. This appointment normally lasts one to two hours. You may drive home after but please only eat soft foods for about a week.
During the healing process, your jawbone will fuse with the dental implant. This may take a couple weeks or months. Each patient’s healing process is different. Once your dentist decides your implant is stable, an abutment is inserted to serve as a connector to the crown. Once your permanent crown is planted on your abutment, you are finished.
Let’s discuss pain. During the procedure, you should not feel any pain but you will feel vibration from the drill, a little pressure and some poking around. After the anesthesia wears off, you will feel discomfort. Most dental procedures are painless but your mind will create anticipation and fear. Remember knowledge is power and if you have a dentist you trust, your dental work will be relatively painless.
Speak to your dentist about the cost of the procedure. Your insurance might cover some of the procedure.
