What to Expect With Veneers - Explained by Dr. Farinas-Han of Smiles by Bergen Dental

Veneers are custom made, wafer-thin pieces of porcelain which cover your own teeth to improve your smile. They are bonded to your teeth and change the appearance of the teeth. Porcelain veneers are better for keeping your teeth stain free and look more natural than resin veneers.

Many people are unhappy with their smiles and veneers can be beneficial in creating a great smile. If your teeth are discolored, worn down, chipped, misaligned, uneven or have gaps, then getting veneers would benefit you.

When you make the determination that you want to get veneers, it will take three trips to the dentist. The first is the consultation with your dentist and the other two are to make and apply the veneers.

When you meet with your dentist for your consultation, discuss what results you want. The dentist will examine your teeth to determine that veneers are appropriate and then will discuss the procedure and might take X-Rays.

To prep your tooth for a veneer, your dentist will remove a tiny bit of enamel from the tooth surface, equal to the new veneer. Then your dentist will take an impression of the tooth, which takes about 2-4 weeks for the veneer to be constructed. You may have a temporary veneer put in while waiting for the permanent one. The dentist will place the permanent veneer on the tooth to determine the fit and color before permanently bonding the veneer. Before bonding the veneer, your tooth will be cleaned and polished, which preps the tooth for the bonding. The bonding cement is added to the veneer, which is then placed on your tooth. Once it is on the tooth, your dentist will apply a special light beam, that activates the bonding cement to make it harden fast. Lastly, any excess cement will be removed, your bite will be checked and any adjustments will be made. You may have to return in a couple weeks for your dentist to check your gums and to examine the veneer.

There are many advantages to veneers. Veneers provide a natural tooth appearance, are stain resistant, your gums tolerate them, and make your teeth appear whiter. They are beneficial to make your smile look more natural. However, there are disadvantages to veneers. Be aware that veneers are not reversible, they are costly, and can’t be repaired if they chip or crack. Once the veneer is in place, the color cannot be changed and therefore, it might not match the rest of your teeth. Lastly, your tooth might be more sensitive to hot and cold food and beverages. Most dentist will not recommend veneers if the patient has unhealthy teeth, weakened teeth or inadequate amount of existing enamel.

Veneers can last between 7 and 15 years and then they need to be replaced. They do not require any special care but you should have a good oral hygiene routine that includes brushing, flossing and rinsing with mouthwash.
