Simple Tips to Avoid Tooth Erosion in Children
As a parent, you only want what’s best for your child. That means clothes that fit, a roof over their heads, meals in their bellies, and hygiene products to keep them fresh and clean. Part of their hygiene routine should be brushing, flossing, and dental cleanings twice a year.
A recent study highlights 1,000 parents who chose not to take their children to a local dentist for checkups when their children were complaining of oral pain. Instead, the parents took their children to the local pharmacy and bought pain relief for dental aches kids complained about. In the study, it was reported that the children whose parents took them to the local pharmacy for pain meds instead of a dental clinic, often had mouth ulcers, erupted teeth, and general toothache pain caused by cavities. Not having a proper diagnosis could cause an issue to become more serious and require extensive treatment.
This raises concerns for pediatric dentists.
Why Kids Need to Visit a Pediatric Dentist
Parents for children suffering oral pain need to make an appointment with their local dentist so that their children can be checked for infections, as well as larger issues such as tooth decay. By not finding out the underlining culprit, pediatric dentists state a child is more susceptible to higher pain, abscesses, and damage to adult teeth as they grow in.
Even though making an appointment can be an inconvenience to busy schedules, it is important parents are taking the correct steps to educate their children on proper hygiene – which includes regular pediatric dental checkups.
Practice Dental Hygiene at Home
Tooth erosion can be caused based on genetics, foods consumed, products consumed, and not receiving the proper dental care. It is recommended for both children and adults to visit their local dentist clinic twice a year. Try to make it a point to go every 6 months. Between cleanings, you should teach your children to brush their teeth twice a day – morning and night for 2 minutes at a time. This will remove excess bacteria and plaque that forms from foods and products consumed. After brushing, parents should teach their children how to floss and if they are old enough, how to use mouth wash.
